I have to go to bed right now. More later.

In New York City, my favorite building has always been the Flatiron Building. I love it for the same reasons I love this one-its roundness. I hope to be there in September. If so, I can guarantee a photo of it. 'Til then, here's this offering from DC. One of these days I'll be done with the DC photos and go back to posting one taken that day. Goodbye to June.

I have shots of this with flash (this one) and without. I went back and forth trying to figure out which I liked better, as I am 99% a non-flash person. In this case, it was the better way to go.
This is the FDR Memorial in Washington, DC. It may be my favorite, after Mr. Lincoln.

I have a soft spot in my heart for street lumps, for it was under a street lamp that I first kissed my spouse.

This is a particularly nice one.

Happy 20th birthday to my first baby girl! It was my distinct pleasure to meet her in Washington while I was there, and to go to the French Embassy (where I got "spoken to" for taking pictures) so she could get the visa that would enable her to leave me for a WHOLE YEAR!

When you were a tiny baby, I held you close and whispered in your ear, so many times, "You're going to go places, my girl-wonderful, wonderful places."

Sometimes, wishing can make it so...

I love you. I'm proud of you. You're beautiful and sweet and smart.
Happy, happy day and blue skies.

177/365+1:Mr. Jefferson-Round and Standing

It's funny, the things we remember. When I was a child and my family went to Washington, my father was telling me about the memorials we would see. He said, "Mr. Lincoln is square and sitting-Mr. Jefferson is round and standing." Every time I go to DC, that runs through my head.

Without my friend, Mr. Tripod, I had great difficulty getting the night shots I wanted. Mr. Lincoln at night blew me away. I wish I could accurately present him in his glory.

Just one of the faces on the Viet Nam Women's Memorial. This piece was awe-inspiring.

174/365+1:It's A Two-Fer! Or More!

Well, here she is. Or, more accurately, here they are. The one on the left is Darling. The one on the right is SameNameAsYoungerDaughter. Originally, we agreed to let Darling move in, because she was, well, without housing. But you see, she has this girlfriend. We've known them both for a few years now, and we love them. So when Darling moved in, we naturally left an open invitation for SameNameAsYoungerDaughter to stay here when she wants, too. They've been together since their junior year of high school. They'll be college sophomores this year. They have jobs, they have a car, they pay for their own laundry supplies, toiletries, entertainment, and any junk food. They clean my house, do my dishes, and are the sweetest girls imaginable. Along with my other three, that is.
As my friend, Peripatetic Polar Bear once said, "no time for the empty nest. And do you even want it?"
The Attorney and I looked at each other this morning and said, in unison, "Are we NUTS?"

I think not.

(PS: I'll leave it to your imaginations as to how it could be "or more!" and will fill you in as time marches on)

Lobby bars are great places to see people. This was a beautiful lobby bar.

I am a hotel whore. From my very early years, I have loved hotels. Whenever we are in a city with fabulous hotels I have to go into the lobbies and surround myself with opulence. We did not stay at this hotel, but we sure enjoyed the view.

169/365+1:Me?, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

In 2002, we took our first 2 daughters to DC on our way from Boston to Memphis. All over the city were donkeys and elephants. We found only one set on this visit-are they all gone, or are we just looking in the wrong places?

166/365+1:Why I Love My Country, Part I

We happened to be in Washington during Pride Weekend. It was not planned, but it was fortunate. Our daughter, Gigi, had never been to a Pride parade or festival.

165/365+1:Only 200 More To Go!, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

I took over 300 photos in DC. I did NOT get to visit any bloggy buddies, which I would have loved, but The Attorney and I want to go back-just us two-and then I'll get to meet my friends for real.

This is in the airport on the way out. It will take me several days to catch up-I'll post a few at a time after tonight, when I'm too whipped.

163/365+1:Please, Mom, Can We Keep Her?

"NEVER!" This is what I have said when my friends have joked by saying, "When are you getting another kid?"

"Never say never." This is what I have said to all three of my kids, over and over.

Guess which one is closer to the truth.

She moves in Wednesday.

We're doing some escaping this week-first. the lake. Then, the city-we'll be going to Washington DC and I hope to take a lot of pictures. The house-sitter has requested a Lincoln Memorial at night. I'll try.

160/365+1:Arkansas, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

"Look, honey! A picture for your blog!" So said The World's Best Bleeding Heart Attorney as I cruised along a country road in Arkansas on our way back from visiting friends at their lake house on this steamy day. The early evening sun was just right, and I pulled over, rolled down her window, and took my shot.

It's so nice to have another pair of eyes.

Funny how you can see a thing every day for years and then one day, out of nowhere, you recognize its beauty. So it is with a door across the street from us. I should have erased the alarm company sign, but I used my favorite soft focus tool instead.

158/365+1:Once Again, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

OK, first of all-who looks this good at 7 a.m.? Right. I thought so.

Boarding pass in hand, going through the security line, there is my beautiful Older Daughter. If I were a kid going to camp for the summer, SHE is who I would want in my cabin-to comfort me when I missed my parents, to put a bandaid on a scratch, to play flashlight tag with me.

Have a great summer, sweetie-your perfume lingers in your room. I sneak in there at night for a whiff.

157/365+1:Common Ground

157/365+1:Common Ground, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

For the last 7 weeks, The World's Best Bleeding Heart Attorney and I have been taking part in a series of meetings working toward racial harmony in our city. The meetings have been held at a local college that is near to our home, and the former work place of a certain blogger I know. The buildings at this school are really lovely, as you can see, and made ever more so by the light of dusk.

It has been a wonderful experience and we have met people who I believe will be life-long friends.

To read more about Common Ground, you can go here.

We went shopping for summer clothes tonight, my Older Daughter and I. It's fun to shop with her. I like her taste, she's not extravagant, and everything is cotton.

She's packing tonight. She's leaving on Friday. I'm going to miss her.

This is Gigi's good friend. He loves his big, sparkly necklace and his fancy car. He's a sweet, fun guy and they spend a lot of time together. He willingly posed with his pride and joy for my blog.
Thanks, Jay!

154/365+1:Connected, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Our girls each go through stages of how and when they hang out with us. Sometimes, our Younger Daughter has gone through phases of wanting to play cards. Gigi will sit with us when her friends are around-they all call us Mom and think we're fun. (Shhh-don't tell them we're really old fogies!)
Older Daughter loves movies as much as we do. She came in while we had a movie on tonight and was sort of watching, all the while connected with her friends from college and camp and work. She'd look up over the computer at the bigger screen and laugh appropriately, and then return to the constant communication that is her life. I feel certain she'll stay plugged in with us when she leaves.
