120/365+1: Who You Callin' "Nocturnal?"

My office complex, as has been illustrated ad nauseum, is really out there in the woods. Imagine my surprise as I ambled down the long walkway to my car this evening and encountered this masked marauder! I was glad I had the 55-200mm lens, and that he was patient while I switched it for the short one on the camera, but oh boy oh boy! was I wishing for the 300.

Although I find it disconcerting to find nocturnal animals out in the daylight, he fascinated me and posed so cooperatively.

119/365+1:And Nobody Had To Die

119/365+1:And Nobody Had To Die, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

I'm lucky because I have many really close, dear friends. Among them is my Visual Friend, so dear a friend that her first name is my daughter's middle name. Probably 8 or 10 years ago, Visual Friend made these two wonderful crows. I coveted them the moment I saw them. I said to her, "When you die, I want these willed to me." Maudlin, yes, but I really, really wanted them.
Before we moved from New England to Tennessee, she brought me a box-a going away gift. Nestled lovingly inside, cushioned by wads of tissue, were the crows.
They now sit in a place of honor in the guest room, waiting for her to come visit. She's coming in September, and The Crows, The Attorney, and I can hardly wait!

117/365+1:Break My Heart

117/365+1:Break My Heart, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

You haven't heard much from me about my Younger Daughter since early February. To make an incredibly long and painful story short and somewhat less painful, she's been away. And she's likely to be so for many months to come.

Today we had our first visit. It's "tax free weekend" here and we knew she would want some new summer clothes, so we made arrangements to meet her to go shopping. We brought her dog. Here are some of the photos I snapped of the 2 of them together.

Break my heart.

(Edited to add: If you click through to my photostream, you can see these photos in full-they're not cut off as they are in the mosaic.)

116/365+1:Bored, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Some days I don't take a picture I like. This was one of those days. I'm bored with my own eye. I need a change of scenery to get re-inspired.
Have a great weekend!

115/365+1: Why I'm Late

115/365+1: Why I'm Late, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Every night before I leave the office I call The Attorney to tell her I'm on my way. My commute is approximately 13 minutes in "rush hour traffic" which is actually non-existent where I live. She is not a jealous or suspicious person, and I give her no reason to be so, but she is a worrier so if I'm late, she starts to worry. Most nights when I saunter in 30 or even 45 minutes after I've called, she figures I've stopped along the way to take pictures. Sometimes I've been so long she calls to make sure I'm ok.
This evening, I did stop to take some photographs. Enough that I knew I was wading into the worry pool. What luck when I encountered an interminable train that would not have been in my way had I not taken the windy road through the gorgeous neighborhood that forces me over the tracks before I hit the main road home.

I took this picture as evidence that it was not only my lolly-gagging that kept me.

More Fringe, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

On April 8, I posted this uninspired and apparently uninspiring photo of my North American Fringe Tree-which is right in front of the Japanese Maple. I promised that on the birthday of my dear friend, Barby Doll, it would be in its glory.

Happy Birthday, Barby Doll.

Go here to see more pictures of this amazing tree, a housewarming gift from the inimitable Tall Pretty Blonde.

113/365+1: Sick

113/365+1: Sick, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

It came in the form of a text message: "Mommy-I think there's something seriously wrong with my throat." The words worried us both: yesterday was not a day either one of us could leave work, but we knew she couldn't remain alone, sick, in her dorm. Like our other two girls, Gigi is rarely ill. When she cries for help, it's real.

The Attorney arranged for one of our friends to collect her from college and bring her home. Her fever was 103. Another friend volunteered to take her to the doctor and pharmacy today. It's not strep. We feel fortunate. But it's some nasty bacterial infection in her throat and the poor angel is down for the count. We'll keep her with us through tomorrow and in the evening bring her back, provided she's better.

She hasn't eaten since Sunday. We're forcing liquid down her. She woke up long enough to watch Aladdin. The World's Best Bleeding Heart Attorney, our Florence Nightingale in Residence, is taking great care. Even when you're almost 20, you need to be babied sometimes.

Mr. Cardinal would not cooperate this morning. This was the most I could get from him. I love the cardinals-their call is so distinctive and they are so beautiful.

109/365+1: Why Not?

109/365+1: Why Not?, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Our dear daughter, Gigi, wanted to know if she could come home for dinner tonight and bring her, um, friend. "Why not?" was our answer.
They were willing subjects when I yanked out the camera.

108/365+1: Remember March 13?

108/365+1: Remember March 13?, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Well, do you remember March 13? This green tree in the background was the glorious pink Magnolia, and this white Dogwood was the bare tree in front. You can see the bus stop in the lower right corner here.
I love this comparison every single year. I think this is the third year that The Attorney and I have made an early morning pilgrimage together to see these trees. I discovered them quite by accident on my commute in.

107/365+1:Opportunity, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

I imagine like most photographers, I love early morning and late afternoon light. They afford so many unexpected opportunities. On the way home from work, I was stopped at a traffic light and looked out my window at the stone wall. The late afternoon light cast just the right tone. Camera ever at my fingertips, I whipped it out and caught this photo-right before the guy behind me honked.

106/365+1:A Bne

106/365+1:A Bne, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

When I went for my first parent-teacher conference concerning Younger Daughter, she was in early kindergarten. I asked how her reading readiness was coming along. The teacher was thrilled to pull out a piece of paper that had "A Bne" written on it. I looked at it and looked at it, and still couldn't figure it out. She turned the paper over, and there was the most exquisite drawing of a bunny I had ever seen. I still have that paper tucked away in a box.

Today, I saw "A Bne" on the grounds at my work. He wouldn't cooperate by looking right at me, but I snapped this and thought of my dear Younger Daughter, who is away from me now.

I miss you, my Little One. I hope you're reading.

105/365+1:From The Archives

105/365+1:From The Archives, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Some days, it's just not possible to take a picture. Today was just such a day. Don't ask me why, because I don't really know.
Back in early January, I posted a picture of "Darling," who is the nut in the front on the floor. The night of this party at our house, I ended up with a ton of pictures that I love. You'll probably see more of them throughout the year.
From the left, on the couch: Gigi, Continental Girl, Basketball Girl, Motor Scooter, Name Like Younger Daughter. And, of course, Darling in the front.
I love these kids. They come over, they don't drink, they let me play with them, and they LOVE the camera!

104/365+1:Grafted, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

This photo has been seriously compromised (artificially lightened) so you can see the wonder of the old dogwood. Apparently, many years ago it was not uncommon for 2 different colors to be grafted together. This tree is half pink, half white. The shot was taken later in the evening than it should have been for maximum effect, but I hear it's going to be ugly for the next couple of days and didn't want to miss it in bloom. It's really quite a beautiful sight, if a bit freakish.

103/365+1:Early, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Despite the fact that this is not a great quality shot because I was in a hurry, I rather like it because it gives a good perspective. In our family, Seder is actually whenever we can gather everyone-not necessarily in adherence to any silly detail like, say, a calendar. Uncle David came from Florida, Cousin A came from Boston, and we had a total of 14 at our house tonight for my spouse's family's traditional Seder. We had great food and a wonderful time. The parents of my Older Daughter's best friend from high school come, too, because they're cousins with The World's Best Bleeding Heart Attorney. Music Store Owner joined us, too.
It's one of our favorite nights of the year. Now I'm off to bed.

101/365+1:"B" is for "Billionaire"

Meet my friend, Johnny B. The "B" is his middle initial. When he was a little boy, I asked him one time, "What does the 'B' stand for?" He said, without missing a beat, "B is for Billionaire...cuz that's what I'm gonna be."
Johnny B is an incredibly gifted musician. His mother, a good friend of mine, has music in her blood, as my spouse would say. So does Johnny B. And just look at how darned cute he is!
I love you, Johnny B.

100! Yes 100/365+1:For My Dear Friend, Anon

First of all, I FELL ASLEEP before posting last night! I'm MAD! But hey, yeah-here's my 100th photo for the year. I had a request for a Memphis dogwood and here it is, just 100 feet away from my parking space at work.

99/365+1: Every Picture Tells A Story, Don' It?

This North American Fringe Tree, which will soon be in full bloom, was a housewarming gift from my friend, Tall Pretty Blonde. It is always at its peak on the birthday of another of my dearest friends, Barby Doll. I get to feel the love of both of them in this one tree. Just wait til you see this lovely piece of nature at her finest.

97/365:1: A Lot On Her mind

97/365:1: A Lot On Her mind, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Gigi sent me a text message on Friday asking me to come get her. She seemed bothered. We spent a lot of time talking this weekend. She has a lot on her mind.
All of my kids are accustomed to me walking in the room with my camera to my eye. They no longer change position automatically. Sometimes I like to capture them as they are.
Dear Gigi, we're here. You'll work it all out and be fine, I know it.

96/365+1:I Asked You To Meet Me For Breakfast

Remember? On March 15th. We keep going out for breakfast, but you're not there. This is a new restaurant close to our home, but the wait person in this picture was a barista at my favorite coffee shop previously.
He's a doll.

95/365+1: And When I Get There

95/365+1: And When I Get There, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

The campus where I work is huge. That's not to imply it's an academic campus, but a corporate one. It is really lovely. I drive through both gorgeous and desolate neighborhoods to get here. It changes from block to block, I'm not sure why.
Anyway, here is what I look at once I get past the security guard.
