Chicago Flower Shop

Chicago Flower Shop, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

For me, life is full of scent memories. In Connecticut and in Boston, in the 1970s, I worked in flower shops. I loved my job in Connecticut-a wonderful store with a terrific boss. In Boston? Not so much.
At any rate, just standing in the door to this store and taking in the smells brought me back 30 years to those jobs.
What I did love about both shops and jobs were the customers. I still correspond by mail with a woman who was my customer in 1974. And there I also met the child who would inspire me, 15 years later, to choose the name for my Older Daughter. She was the prettiest, brightest, most engaging child I had ever met and I LOVED her name.
Madeleine. That's the name.
(I miss you, Mad...hope Paris is treating you right today. XOXO MOM)

Lake Leaf

Lake Leaf, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

I learned to swim in Lake Michigan as a young child. My father taught me. The Attorney and I walked along the shore of the Lake and the smell of the water brought back so many memories of those swimming lessons.

Chicago Fall

Chicago Fall, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

The World's Best Bleeding Heart Attorney and I slipped off for a weekend in Chicago. It was gorgeous and sunny and we went by Grant Park where the barricades were up, days in advance. We ate wonderful food, we spent time in the whirlpool and the pool, we held hands and walked around. And we saw great friends and family.
Mostly, we were just together. It was long overdue.

Great weekend. More photos to follow.

Yes He Did

Yes He Did, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Dear DT, DG, and C-
Your daughters-my daughters, are young women now. Their whole lives, we have taught them that they could do, be, achieve anything. We have told them that hard work, determination, inner joy, and deep love would help them through whatever came their way and the world could be theirs.

Today, I know all this to be true. No reservations. They might be unlucky at times, they might have doors closed on them for stupid reasons, but with the support of their family and friends who will always help them find opportunity, I believe they will soar.

Thank you for the incredible gift of their lives, and know that I celebrate with you.

Gigi After The Polls

Gigi After The Polls, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Older Daughter absentee voted. Gigi came up from Mississippi to vote here. This is her victory punch upon her return. We were clustered around the TV by then, The Attorney, our friends, and me.
I had to get a shot of her joy.

My creation, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

I worked at Obama Headquarters all day yesterday, making calls and taking photos of all the different shirts I saw. FUN!

Last night, I screamed and yelled. Today, I have cried and cried. Tears of joy, mind you.

Forty Years

Forty Years, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Forty years ago this month, this photo was taken for my Senior yearbook in high school.

Underneath our photos, we each had a quote chosen by the Senior Editor on the yearbook committee.
My photo had this quote: "The most essential thing for happiness is the gift for friendship."

At any rate, I am now, along with three of my classmates, helping to pull together a 40th reunion for next July.

I cannot wait.

Girl Sun Dog

Younger Daughter's tousled mop and placid pose give a clue as to the hour of this trip to the park. Very early Sunday morning.

You notice my empty nest? Nah, me either.

Sunday Paper

I love the way this young man lines up the Sunday paper. They only make 50 cents on each one, so he has to sell a lot to make the hours worth it.

I came out into the yard the first morning after I put this sign out, and thought it was on fire! That's actually condensation being warmed by the sun.

266/365+1: My Fair Ladies

266/365+1: My Fair Ladies, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

I realize now I may never catch up. We have been so busy-my work days are wild, our evenings are packed, and our weekends are spent shuffling both Gigi and Younger Daughter back and forth to their respective domiciles. I can say that life with Younger Daughter is new and fresh and whole, thanks to the world's most incredible therapist who has helped us all. She will be living back at home before we know it.
Older Daughter is loving life in Paris. The Attorney and I are loving life in the empty nest, such as it is. All is well, and I feel certain that one of these days my camera will be back in use daily. Until then, here are my meager offerings. We took YD, Flower Girl, and Gigi to the Mid-South Fair the other night. These are all from then. When Older Daughter was a little girl, she called the Merry-Go-Round the "Mary Ground."

To anyone who still comes by, thank you.

244/365+1:Softball, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

We drove for hours today to a softball tournament. No hats, no sunscreen. We picked up Younger Daughter and took her with us. Gigi played well, and we are sunburned. Because we never heard about staying out of the sun. (Ahem)

The Attorney and I are ALONE. It's true. It took a minute, but we are alone, and as much as we adore and enjoy all the young people in our life, there's something to be said for it being just the two of us.
Let's see how long it lasts.

There is not much I can say about this. Anything I might say could be considered inflammatory. I will tell you it's made of FOAM. And it's within the city limits of Memphis. That is all.

I'll Be Back! I Swear It!

I have had so much to do-at home, at work, in between. My poor old camera has been ignored and I'm running like a nut. My plan is to pick the camera up again this weekend and get a ton of shots-I hope I can catch up, but this may turn out to be "Project As Many As I Can Manage" rather than 365+1.

Things are really, really good in my world, and I'd love to start sharing the smiles again.

241/365+1:You Never Know

241/365+1:You Never Know, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

It would seem that we're really on the mend. We've been having wonderful phone calls and visits as the direct result of a sister meeting of the minds among Older Daughter, Gigi, and Younger Daughter. While we're far from perfect, we have been able to meet Younger Daughter's boyfriend, have him at the house with her, and have a really terrific time.

When I say that I am constantly amazed at the resilience of the human spirit, I speak not only of my daughter. Wish me luck.

I woke up crying on Wednesday, but made sure there were no tears at the airport. I didn't want her to see me upset-it makes her cry. I know she's off to a fabulous start when we both smile just before she passes through security.

We have lots of these pictures of Older Daughter and me at the airport. She's been traveling alone for years. I think this is a nice one, if a bit too pink. I'll play with the color before printing it.

233/365+1:Controversy, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

Last Sunday I tried a new coffee place-my usual haunt was not open due to a staff over-sleep. I was not thrilled here. The young man who worked there was spouting his political/social theories. Not what I wanted to hear at 6:30 on a Sunday, especially since they did not happen to coincide with mine. I had to call bullshit at him. I won't be going back.
Hint: if you're going to try to talk politics with a customer, pretend you agree with her and talk about her after work with your friends. I'm just sayin'.

My fabulous Older Daughter has a blog! (OK, well she hasn't posted yet.)
Please visit her here and show her some love.
I will return to posting pictures tomorrow, after she leaves for Paris.
I've been very busy being a mom.

Older Daughter leaves for Paris on August 27th and won't be back until next July. Until the day she's back, we're flying the French flag on our house. If I were superstitious, I'd say it's keeping her safe.

218/365+1:Bogie Waits For Mom, originally uploaded by Yankee T.

If you've been reading for a while, you understand the importance of my morning coffee ritual. During the week, it's one place and one place only. There are several people I've come to know for three minutes a day. One of them is M, with whom I became acquainted because I fell in love with her dog in the parking lot. He waits so patiently while she makes the coffee run. This is his last stop before doggie day care each morning. The photo is a bit milky because it's taken through the car window, but I love the attentive look on his face.

Sis, this one's for you.
